Liverpool Women Strengthen Squad for New Season
Liverpool Women have announced significant squad improvements ahead of the 2025/26 season, demonstrating clear ambition to compete at the highest level. The club broke its women's transfer record by signing Canadian forward Olivia Smith from Sporting Lisbon for £212,000.
Smith, a 19-year-old forward, impressed in the Portuguese top-flight with an outstanding 26 goal contributions in 28 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign. She was also named the Best Young Player of the Campeonato Nacional Feminino, highlighting her potential impact for the Reds. Notably, Smith will be involved immediately in pre-season preparations, having not been called up for the 2024 Paris Olympics national squad.
The signing reflects Liverpool Women’s growing ambition to build a competitive squad and invest strategically in top young talent. This move aligns with the broader club strategy of strengthening both the men's and women's teams through targeted acquisitions and record-breaking signings.
In addition to the new signing, the club has seen some departures due to contract expiries and retirements, including Yana Daniels, Niamh Fahey, Taylor Hinds, Jasmine Matthews, and Teagan Micah. These changes mark a transitional phase aimed at refreshing the squad's quality and depth.
Overall, Liverpool Women appear poised to challenge more vigorously in domestic and European competitions, underpinned by both promising young arrivals and a reshaped squad committed to progress.
