Liverpool Football Club has taken an unprecedented step to honour the memory of Diogo Jota by retiring his number 20 jersey across every level of the club.
The decision, made after close consultation with his wife, Rute and family, reflects just how much Jota meant to everyone connected to Liverpool.
The forward, who arrived in 2020 and quickly became a fan favourite, wore the number with pride and distinction during some of the club’s greatest recent triumphs.
From the start, he embodied everything supporters value: commitment, humility and the spirit of togetherness.

Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, shared that this marks the first time in Liverpool’s long history that a squad number has been retired in memory of a player.
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal—and therefore never to be forgotten,” Edwards said in same reports by Liverpool FC.
He emphasised that the move is both a recognition of Jota’s immense contribution on the pitch and a testament to the deep connections he forged off it.
Club leaders Billy Hogan, John Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon described the tribute as a reflection of Jota’s lasting impact on Liverpool FC.
His influence and warmth will be felt for years to come and his name will remain woven into the fabric of Anfield forever.
The number 20 shirt, worn by Diogo as he helped lead Liverpool to their historic 20th league title, will never again be assigned.
Instead, it stands as a permanent tribute to a player and person who gave everything to the club.
