Liverpool FC have released an official statement after the devasting news of Diogo Jota and his brother’s passing emerged in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The accident occurred on the A-52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria shortly after midnight, when the luxury vehicle carrying Jota and his 26-year-old brother, André Silva, veered off the road and erupted into flames.
Emergency services pronounced both men dead at the scene.
Jota had only recently celebrated his marriage to longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22, and the couple shared three young children together.
A Liverpool FC statement read:
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”
“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro paid tribute via social media:
“The news of Diogo Jota’s death, an athlete who brought great honour to the name of Portugal, along with his brother, is both unexpected and tragic.
Today is a sorrowful day for football and for national and international sports.”
Local authorities in Zamora have opened an investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash, with further details expected as inquiries continue
