Liverpool host Ajax at Anfield tonight with qualification still in the balance following the Reds’ home defeat to Atalanta last week, and Jurgen Klopp needs a result on Merseyside.

Manchester City have already qualified for the last-16, but can secure top spot if they win at FC Porto this evening - though Pep Guardiola may rotate his team given a hectic fixture schedule.

Liverpool will remain without Thiago Alcantara against Ajax in the Champions League this evening.

The Reds’ star summer signing has not featured since being hurt in the Merseyside derby in October and is now expected to be out until the New Year with a knee injury suffered in a challenge from Everton’s Richarlison.

Jurgen Klopp has also provided an update on Virgil van Dijk’s recovery, saying the Dutchman’s knee “doesn’t look like a knee should” after surgery to repair ligament damage suffered in that same game at Goodison Park.

Van Dijk is likely to miss the remainder of the 2020/21 season, while Liverpool also remain without Naby Keita, Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri.

England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is progressing well with his rehab from a calf issue, though is not ready to return yet.

James Milner will also miss the visit of Ajax in Group D, having sustained a hamstring injury in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Captain Jordan Henderson returned from injury at half-time at the Amex and should start on Tuesday as Liverpool look to avoid defeat and secure qualification for the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition.

Real Madrid had gotten off to a shaky start in this season’s competition but  a crucial victory over Inter Milan last time out has put them back in command of their own destiny in Group B.

A win tonight would be enough to send them through with a game to spare, and they could even go top of the group, if Borussia Monchengladbach fail to beat Inter later on.

Zinedine Zidane’s Los Blancos are struggling, having lost two of their last four games - including a shock 2-1 home setback against Alaves on Saturday.

That marked Real’s second LaLiga home defeat of the campaign, and Joselu - who scored Alaves’ second of the game at the weekend - told Standard Sport before the match that Real playing at an empty Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano rather than a Bernabeu full of passionate fans could be having an impact.

"Their fans are always supporting them... as a visiting team... it's always more difficult apart from the fact there is great impact, there's 90,000 people putting pressure on you.

"It's not the same being a visiting team at the Di Stefano as it would be [at the Bernabeu].

"They're probably affected more than we are."

Luckily for Zidane, Real are away to Shakhtar this evening, and the Real legend will want a response from his side.
