Football is full of moments that bring people together.
Matches create excitement and rivalry.
But sometimes life steps in and reminds everyone that the game is more than goals and points.
This weekend, Liverpool FC Women were meant to face Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League.
Fans looked forward to a lively clash at Villa Park.
Instead, the match will not happen.
Something bigger than football has called for a pause.
Players, staff, and supporters now share a different mood.
It is a time to stop, reflect, and remember someone important to the club’s story.
Remembering Matt Beard and why the game was stopped
The Women’s Super League confirmed that the fixture at Villa Park scheduled for 12 pm BST on Sunday has been postponed following the sudden and tragic passing of former Liverpool FC Women manager Matt Beard?
The league said, “A further announcement regarding the rearrangement of the fixture will be made in due course.”
It also posted on X that a minute’s silence will be held before kick-off in all WSL and WSL2 games.
Matt Beard meant a great deal to Liverpool.
He led the team to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014 and managed Liverpool during their first ever Champions League campaign.
Beard returned in 2021 to guide the Reds back to the WSL and helped them secure a seventh-placed finish the following season.
He remained in charge until February of this year.
Liverpool honoured him with heartfelt words, saying, “an extremely committed and successful manager.”
They added, “He was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club.”
“Rest in peace, Matt.”
Beard was appointed Burnley manager in June but resigned after just two months.
Burnley’s Women’s National League match against West Brom was also postponed on Sunday as a mark of respect.
For Liverpool FC Women, this is more than a lost match day.
It is a moment to honour a manager who shaped their history and cared deeply for the people around him.
The club and its supporters will wait for new fixture details while remembering the man who helped build their success and left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
