Ahead of the main event at Anfield, which once again served up a grand finale, Liverpool’s Under 19 side began their UEFA Youth League campaign with a goalless draw against their Spanish counterparts.

Despite naming a strong side containing Trey Nyoni as captain, the Reds were without key frontman Jayden Danns, who was later an unused substitute by Arne Slot.

Rob Page’s side were further hampered just a few minutes into the match when Will Wright was forced off after hobbling away from a full blooded 50/50.

It’s great for the lads to expose themselves to different teams of that ability.

They caused us a few problems, but I think we created, over the 95 minutes, I think we created three of the best chances I’d say.”

On Bajcetic: “Yes, it’s a possibility (to feature for the Under 21s soon), isn’t it. So, it’s about getting back on the grass. It’s about exposing him to minutes to get him back up to full fitness.”

On the Youth League: “Massively (important) I’ve been a league manager myself, and I’ve always looked at the Under-21s League and gone, well, I’m not sure it’s an industry that I can.

And trust is a big thing with managers, you’ve got to trust for your job that you’re going to bring a player in that can not only just compete, they know they’ve got ability, it’s everything else that comes with it.

But that mentality to defend and keep clean sheets and a winning mentality, everything we do in training is about winning, it’s about getting results, giving the players accountability.

So, it’s giving them the tools to be able to, when they are called upon, whether it’s with the first team, whether it’s with another club elsewhere, that they’re sort of a more rounded player to compete.”

On Pinnington: “Yeah, his attitude’s been incredible, because he’s been frustrated because he wants to play centre-back, understandably.
