Liverpool U21 coach Jay Spearing has been discussing his immense pride at seeing Jayden Danns perform like he has this season.

Danns announced himself to the Anfield faithful and indeed the world when he scored a brace against Southampton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Two instinctive finishes on the night gave Liverpool a 3-0 win, with academy prospect Lewis Koumas also scoring his first goal for the club.

A few weeks on from that famous night at Anfield, Danns was on the pitch as Liverpool went on to beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

He won his first piece of silverware with the club at just 18, and it’s safe to say that there should be a lot more to come.

After those successful few weeks, Danns was rewarded with a new, long-term contract in March.

Jayden Danns has been at Liverpool since the age of eight and will no doubt have been delighted at extending his stay at his boyhood club.

The striker’s goal scoring record is strong for Liverpool’s various youth sides – with 21 goals across the U18 and U21 sides respectively.

It was reported that Danns was earning a paltry weekly wage of £220 – but likely has seen a significant pay rise as a result his progress this season.

What did Jay Spearing say about Jayden Danns?

Speaking to the Athletic, Spearing revealed that it is an ‘unbelievable feeling’ seeing the 18-year-old grow his wings having played with his father Neil Danns:

“It is an unbelievable feeling to see people like Jayden Danns succeed.

I played with Dannsy’s dad Neil at Bolton for years.”

“I have known Neil (now assistant manager at Tranmere) for a very long time and we’ve always kept in touch.”

“So to be coaching his son and knowing how hard it has been for him to break through to see him have that moment, it’s some achievement for him and a proud moment for all of the academy staff who have helped him reach that goal.”

Spearing also spoke on highly-rated talent Trey Nyoni, who made the switch from Leicester City’s academy in the last summer transfer window.

Against Barrow in September last year, Spearing played alongside Nyoni in an EFL Trophy defeat – and he revealed exactly what his role is regarding the Liverpool youngsters:

“I’m in there to guide them and protect them.” Spearing says.

“I told (Trey), ‘This is going to bring so much out of you.

If you can test yourself on a Tuesday night in Barrow with it blowing a gale, you can overcome a lot.”

“For him to go from playing under-16s football at Leicester to playing at Barrow, he was probably thinking, ‘What’s going on here?’”

“I told him to get on the ball and don’t change how you play?

That game is a prime example of what my role is.”
