New Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has been called "unprofessional" following his British record £125million move from Newcastle United.

And the Reds have been accused of encouraging the forward to agitate for the transfer after an acrimonious saga was finally brought to an end on Monday evening.

Liverpool confirmed the arrival of Isak shortly after the deadline having tracked the player all summer and had a £110m offer rejected at the start of August.

Newcastle were adamant the 25-year-old was not for sale, but their stance weakened significantly with Isak training away from the first team and having not featured at all during pre-season.

The Magpies' moves for Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart and Yoane Wissa from Brentford - who acted similarly to Isak in wanting to leave - paved the way for them to return to the negotiating table with Isak subsequently replacing £116m Florian Wirtz as Liverpool's club record signing.

Isak has been roundly criticised in the North East with one report claiming Newcastle insiders had intimated they feared the striker was sabotaging attempts to qualify for the Champions League towards the end of last season.

And while praising the attitude of Marc Guehi - who saw a move to Liverpool collapse due to Crystal Palace's failure to sign an adequate replacement before the deadline - former Manchester United midfield Paul Scholes has taken a dim view of Isak's actions.

“You would say Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa have done it the wrong way, but they’ve still got what they wanted," said Scholes.

"Marc Guehi is a great example of doing it the right way – he’s playing, he’s training – he might still get his move to Liverpool in the future.

“You don’t like it (as a fan) – it’s unprofessional (when a player forces move).

You should be training every day, playing, and helping your team for the first three games of the season, exactly as Guehi has done."

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes added: “You can see it from a players’ point of view as well because they want the move.

"Liverpool would have been putting pressure of Isak and said ‘we’ve bid this amount of money and it’s a brilliant amount of money for you, now you’ve got to try and kick off a little bit’.

"You can say no to that, but if you’re desperate for the move, you’d do it."
