Virgil van Dijk has hit out at Piers Morgan after he claimed the Liverpool star was not in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday evening. The Holland defender would end up finishing second as Barcelona ace Lionel Messi picked up the award for a sixth time.

Before the event Van Dijk was asked what he made of Ronaldo’s absence at the event for a second year in a row on the red carpet.

The centre-back questioned whether the 34-year-old was truly in the race to win at the event anyway.

On one of his rivals for the prize, the 28-year-old replied: “Was he a rival then?”

Morgan didn’t take kindly to the Liverpool star’s remarks and claimed Ronaldo is in a different bracket to the Champions League winner.

He exclaimed: “No.. @Cristiano is a far greater player, you’re not in his league.”

But Van Dijk has seen the TV presenter and Arsenal fan’s comments and claims he was only joking.

He said: “Hi Piers, If you don’t jump on the social media bandwagon and would listen to the whole interview then you would know I made a joke, and only got respect for those 2.”

"I hope to continue for a long time. I realise that I am very lucky, even if, one day, retirement will ring. It will be difficult.

"But I still have beautiful years ahead of me. Time goes very quickly, so I want to enjoy football and my family."
