Liverpool are advancing in talks to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.
Ekitike recently emerged as a target for Arne Slot’s side after they failed to test Newcastle United’s resolve with a tentative approach for Alexander Isak.
The Reds’ Premier League counterparts saw a £70 million bid for the France under-21 international rejected earlier this week amid the interest in Isak.
A British transfer record fee of £120M was expected to be tabled for the Swede in attempts to prise him away from St James’ Park this summer.
But with the Magpies maintaining a hardline stance, Anfield chiefs have intensified their pursuit of Ekitike, who has long been on their list of preferred transfer targets.
He produced 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Eintracht last season and is understood to prioritise a move to Merseyside over Eddie Howe’s side.
Ekitike’s release clause with the Bundesliga outfit stands at €100M (£86.5M) but it is unknown whether Liverpool’s move for him will trigger that automatic figure.
