In what could be seen as a benefit to Liverpool in a transfer battle with Bayern Munich over Florian Wirtz, the 22-year-old has already recently stated he sees 'appeal' in 'experiencing something new'.

However, he was also ready to play down speculation ahead of the summer window.

Liverpool are reported as having conducted a meeting with Wirtz, his father Hans-Joachim - who is also his agent - and his mother, Karin, upon a day-trip to England on Tuesday.

According to The Athletic, the Reds' admiration for the attacking midfielder is long-standing' and they 'ready' to explore a deal - one that may cost well in excess of £100m, it would seem.

Playing for Bayer Leverkusen he has generated plenty of interest in recent years, namely Bayern and Premier League rivals Manchester City have been tied to his pursuit.

And this was a topic Wirtz was willing to breach himself only last week in discussion with Sports Illustrated Deutschland.

"I’m pretty lucky that I have so many excellent clubs right on my doorstep and that I can now play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe.

"I have a lot of respect for the lads here in Leverkusen who come from South America or Africa, for example, and leave their families and surroundings behind for their careers.

"It definitely appeals to me to leave my comfort zone at some point and experience something new," he admitted for the first time, adding: "I know football locker rooms well enough and I’m convinced that I would quickly settle in wherever I go."

Such a comment sounds good against the context of chief chasers Bayern coming from the same league Wirtz has played in since he was a 17-year-old in 2020, so he may not wish to stick around.

The drawback would still be having to fend of rivals Man City, who with the German national's signing would replace Kevin de Bruyne and threaten to fight for the Reds' Premier League crown next term.

Ultimately, Wirtz had not wanted to get dragged into speculation, adding: "I keep seeing posts about me on social media.
