Two of European football's giants meet again in the Champions League There will be a capacity Anfield crowd on a Champions League night for the first time since the last-16 defeat to Atletico Madrid in March 2020, which was one of the last major events staged before the coronavirus lockdown.

Tonight is the first time these two aristocrats of European football have played a competitive match other than a Champions League final.

Milan are making their first appearance in the Champions League proper since 2013-14 and are in the middle of an expansive rebuild.

Liverpool will get their chance for revenge against Atletico later in the group stage but their opener is a fixture no less resonant as they face AC Milan in a repeat of the 2005 and 2007 finals.

The events of the first final in Istanbul need little introduction - an improbable comeback from 3-0 down against a team of modern greats gave Liverpool fans the night of their lives.

Liverpool will of course be missing Harvey Elliott after his gruesome dislocated ankle at Leeds, while Roberto Firmino is expected to be absent again which will likely mean a front three of Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.
