The UEFA Champions League destiny of Liverpool will soon be decided with the league-phase draw scheduled this month.

UCL’s 71st edition will be commencing on September 16.

This season, the new format of 36 teams competing for the title will complete its second year of existence.

The Merseysiders, who went out last season in an agonising defeat by penalties in the Round of 16 against PSG, again have the chance to prove their worth and potentially win European glory.

With the stage set for the league-phase draw on August 28, the Reds now await the question of who will be their opponents.

29 teams have already qualified automatically for the league phase.

The remaining seven spots will be determined by qualifying playoffs that end on August 27.

The Anfield giants are one of six PL sides to secure automatic qualification alongside Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

Principally, teams from the same league cannot be drawn to face each other and cannot meet more than two opponents from any one other country.

Clubs will be separated, based on seeding, into four pots of nine and will then be assigned to play two sides from each pot – one at home and one away.

This is how the league phase matches in the 2025-26 season will be played:

Matchday 1: 16–18 September 2025
Matchday 2: 30 September–1 October 2025
Matchday 3: 21/22 October 2025
Matchday 4: 4/5 November 2025
Matchday 5: 25/26 November 2025
Matchday 6: 9/10 December 2025
Matchday 7: 20/21 January 2026
Matchday 8: 28 January 2026

And the knockout phase schedule looks like this:

Knockout phase play-offs: 17/18 & 24/25 February 2026
Round of 16: 10/11 & 17/18 March 2026
Quarter-finals: 7/8 & 14/15 April 2026
Semi-finals: 28/29 April & 5/6 May 2026
Final: 30 May 2026 (The Puskas Arena, Budapest)

The league-phase draw will be held in Monaco and will begin at 5 pm BST on Thursday, August 28.

This draw will definitely be an exciting watch for the Kopites and will also be crucial in determining what chances Liverpool have of winning the Champions League this season.
