Liverpool FC has confirmed that a legendary former captain will present Virgil van Dijk with the Premier League title on Sunday.
The Reds will officially lift the title this Sunday at Anfield in their last game of the season against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.
Despite winning the title against Tottenham last month, Premier League traditions prevented the Reds from lifting the trophy in front of fans.
But that will now take place at Anfield on Sunday, with the trophy-lifting tradition set to be conducted in front of a watching crowd for the first time since the Premier League’s inception.
While this is undoubtedly Liverpool’s second Premier League title and their 20th in history, fans have not watched the Premier League trophy being lifted at Anfield.
The last time Liverpool lifted the trophy in 2020, it was in an empty stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions in place back then?
But things will be different this time, with what is expected to be a packed full Anfield set to experience their first league title lift since the 1989-90 season.
The club has now confirmed that Alan Hansen, the last Liverpool captain to lift the league trophy in front of fans at Anfield, will have the honour of handing current captain Van Dijk the Premier League trophy on Sunday.
Hansen made 620 appearances for the club, winning eight league titles—three of which were as captain—including in the 1989-90 season, which was the last time supporters witnessed the Reds lift the top-flight championship trophy.
It is set to be an emotional return to Anfield to be part of the presentation party for the Liverpool legend, who has recently recovered from a battle with ill health.
Meanwhile, Liverpool also confirmed that Mark and Jo McVeigh of the Owen McVeigh Foundation will be involved as community representatives.
“Mark and Jo will bring the trophy pitchside and place it on a plinth for Hansen to then hand over to Van Dijk.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also likely to be at Anfield on Sunday for the trophy lift ceremony.
Klopp will be attending the LFC Foundation’s Gala Ball on Friday 23rd May as he continues his work as an honorary ambassador for the club’s official charity.
It is likely the German stays in the city over the weekend to soak in the title celebrations.
