Joe Gomez could be on his way out of Liverpool as soon as January if Marc Guehi heads the other way, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about the uncertainty over Gomez’s long-term future.

Gomez became a target for AC Milan in the final throes of the summer transfer window, but Liverpool retained the defender after failing with a last-ditch move of their own to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Football Insider revealed on Friday that both Brighton and Crystal Palace explored bids to sign Gomez before the window slammed shut, with the latter seeing him as the potential replacement for Guehi.

The 28-year-old remains a Liverpool player for the time being, but Football Insider sources have stated that if Liverpool resume their pursuit of Guehi in January, the door could be opened for Gomez to leave.

Sources have told Football Insider that both Gomez and the Reds’ hierarchy are happy for him to stay put, but Liverpool are already in “open dialogue” with Guehi to fast-track his move to Anfield in January.

Football Insider revealed on 3 September that Palace will demand £25million to sell Guehi in January as they prepare for a new bid from Liverpool, who could be urged to use Gomez as a potential makeweight.

Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke stated that Gomez is in no rush to leave Anfield, but after Liverpool went so close to signing Guehi, his future in the first-team is uncertain at best.

“A lot will depend on how things are going in Liverpool”, he told Football Insider.

“If Liverpool do go into the market for defenders such as Marc Guehi, that opens the door for Gomez to leave.

“But for now, he’s happy at Liverpool and most importantly, Liverpool are happy with Joe Gomez as well.”

With the knowledge that Palace were prepared to launch a late-window swoop for Gomez had they lost Guehi to Liverpool on deadline day, Arne Slot will be confident of striking a brand new deal in January.

Football Insider revealed on 6 September that Liverpool are ready to wait until Guehi’s contract expires at the end of the season and sign him for free, but Palace’s interest in Gomez could change that stance.

A nominal fee for Guehi with Gomez heading to Selhurst Park could be Liverpool’s most seamless way of ensuring the England centre-back lines up in red this season or next, and all eyes will be on the duo once the new year comes around.
