The Reds are astute operators in the transfer market and have shown that once again this summer with the number of top deals they have got over the line.

The fact that they have made close to £150m in sales has also gone a bit under the radar, with this highlighting just how good a job Richard Hughes is doing.

However, despite all the plaudits the sporting director gets, he could be on the verge of sanctioning a sale that could have huge implications next season.

On the surface, it might look like another good piece of business, but when broken down, the cracks begin to show.

Liverpool wanted a striker all summer and at one point, it looks as if they might not get one and would have to stick with Darwin Nunez.

However, after signing Hugo Ekitike, the Reds remained interested in Alexander Isak, a move that, if pulled off, would allow the Uruguayan to leave without any problems whatsoever.

But now, getting the Swede appears to have hit another delay as Newcastle look set to miss out on Benjamin Sesko, with the Magpies refusing to sell until a replacement has been found.

At the same time as this, Nunez is edging closer to a move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that there is a verbal agreement in place between the two clubs.

All that is left now is for the 26-year-old to give them the green light, which is expected to happen, with this a transfer that could develop quickly.

By selling Nunez at this time, though, the Reds would be left a little short in the attacking areas, especially as they have already sold Luis Diaz.

As well as this, if they fail to get Isak, which is a strong possibility, then Ekitike will be the only recognised striker at the club, adding even more pressure onto his shoulders.

With that being said, the sensible move would perhaps be to keep hold of him until they have been given an answer on Isak or else they will be left short as they aim to defend their title.

There really is the question of how many chances will Nunez get, but there is a strong case to suggest that just one more is needed.

The 26-year-old looks rejuvenated this summer and has impressed throughout pre-season, looking a lot calmer in front of goal.

Of course, judging him on some friendlies is not the way to go but Reds fans know better than anyone that there is a player in there somewhere, and once he is discovered, he will simply explode.

Another year of experience might have taught him a lot and helped him grow as a player and person, suggesting that one last shot to make it at Anfield might be the way to go.

If they get a big offer, it will certainly be hard to turn down, but it would be no surprise to see Liverpool regret it later down the line.
