Liverpool have been tipped to re-sign Harvey Elliott next summer as well as bringing back another recent sale.

Elliott completed a deadline day move to Aston Villa, on what is an initial loan deal with a £35m obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The England under-21 international had fallen out of favour, with Florian Wirtz’s switch to Anfield pushing him even further down the pecking order.

Liverpool included a buy-back clause in the deal to sell Elliott, hinting that they may return for the attacker in the future.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the 22-year-old is not the only recent Reds sale who could eventually move back to Merseyside.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that the Premier League champions also hold a buy-back clause for Ben Doak, who has now permanently left the club.

Liverpool sold Doak to Bournemouth for an initial fee of £20m, plus a further £5m in add-ons, but hold the ability to re-sign him in the future for a set price.

Wyness added that the Reds could activate one of these buy-back clauses as early as next summer.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Elliott and Ben Gannon Doak.

What I’ve found out is that they both have very reasonable buy-back clauses.

“For Liverpool, from what I’m hearing from my sources in there, Elliott is still considered as one who may come back or be bought back in the summer, because they like him.

“They just didn’t feel physically he had enough to give, but still, he is rated and liked at Anfield and would be considered certainly as one to come back.

“It was a bit of a battle internally, apparently at Liverpool, to decide to let him go.

So there may well be a number of people who would voice his side for things, and I think he could well end up back at Anfield.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool risk losing out to Real Madrid or Juventus for Marc Guehi’s signature after their failed attempt to sign the defender, sources have told Football Insider.

Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player after his deadline day move to Anfield collapsed at the eleventh hour, with Oliver Glasner personally intervening to prevent his captain leaving without a replacement.

Sources say that Real Madrid and Juventus are both fond of the England international and could launch their own bids to sign him on a free transfer.

The pair have a strong track record when it comes to picking up free agents, with Liverpool worried that this may mean they miss out on Guehi.
