Liverpool have lost one of their backroom staff members to the England Men’s national team.
It’s been a summer of changes for the Reds both on and off the field.
John Heitinga has made the decision to leave Arne Slot’s backroom staff and has already been announced as the head coach of Ajax.
The former Netherlands defender, who joined Liverpool in 2024, has experience from his time as interim Ajax boss in 2023.
His arrival follows Ajax’s dramatic collapse in the 2024-25 Eredivisie title race, where they squandered a nine-point lead to PSV Eindhoven.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has returned to the club as a global talent scout.
The 40-year-old made 91 appearances for Liverpool between 2011–2013.
Downing report to chief scout Barry Hunter, expanding the club’s reach in markets like South America and Eastern Europe.
In yet more staff reshuffling, Liverpool U21 coach Barry Lewtas announced his departure from Liverpool Football Club after 12 years of distinguished service in the Academy system, concluding an era that has seen the club’s youth development reach lofty heights.
The exit of another staffroom has now been confirmed.
According to reports, Liverpool’s first team physiotherapist Steve Lilley has left the club to take up a full-time role with the England men’s team.
Lilley’s career started in rugby when he was a Physiotherapist with union club Leeds Tykes and also did an internship with league club Leeds Rhinos.
Lilly arrived at Anfield five-and-a-half years ago after nearly nine years working at Manchester City.
He had been working part-time as the England Senior Team Physiotherapist since August 2024, but will now take the job permanently.
Meanwhile, the Glasgow Times has confirmed that Mitchel White has taken up the tole of Liverpool’s first team physical performance coach.
White had been the First Team Physical Performance and Reconditioning Coach at the Rangers since April 2024.
He arrived at Ibrox in November 2021 and became First Team Assistant Performance Coach in August 2023 after nearly two years as a Sport Scientist in the club’s Academy.
