The Liverpool hierarchy have reportedly devised a new plan to sign Timo Werner within the struggles of the current financial climate. The RB Leipzig frontman tops Jurgen Klopp's summer wish-list and everything appeared to be in place for a deal earlier in the year.

Werner has not been afraid to speak from his heart, declaring on a number of occasions his admiration for the Liverpool project.

He has admitted that he would love to work with Klopp and play for the current champions of the world who are a great fit for his qualities.

Liverpool's interest has been no secret either and Werner is a player they have been tracking for several years.

And they finally looked ready to make their move for the attacker before COVID-19 threw a major spanner in the works.

The transfer market is expected to be a very different place when normality resumes and clubs will not have huge budgets to spend as they recover from the financial constraints of the virus.

Yet Football Insider claim Liverpool have been working on a fresh plan to sign Werner.

He currently has a release clause in the region of £52million, which expires on June 15.

Should no club trigger that, RB Leipzig will hold all the power. For now at least.

In 12 months time Werner will be available for £36m, some £16m less than this summer.

It's quite a big difference for Leipzig, particularly for your star man.

The report claims that Liverpool are planning to test Leipzig's resolve and offer just below his current release clause.

That way, it could give Leipzig something to seriously consider.

Given Werner is so set on joining Liverpool, the Bundesliga club are unlikely to stand in the way of his dreams.

The 24-year-old is expected to stay for one more season in Leipzig if he cannot move to Merseyside this summer.

Klopp is desperate to add another forward to his ranks, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane set to miss up to six weeks of action next January when they head off to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Should Liverpool be unable to land Werner, they're expected to stick with their guns.
