Jurgen Klopp reportedly spoke on the phone to Victor Osimhen, before he sealed a move to Napoli from Lille. The Nigerian sealed a £45million switch to the Serie A outfit yesterday, ending a long-running saga which nearly saw Osimhen snub Napoli after interest from the Premier League.

The striker was involved in 31 goals across in board last season for club and country, altering a host of clubs across Europe.

He only arrived at Lille last summer from Belgian side Charleroi but he soon felt at home at the Stade Pierre Mauroy where the fans quickly fell for him.

All of the Premier League's top six besides Manchester City have been linked with the striker in recent months.

Chelsea saw first hand just how dangerous he was when he scored against the Blues in the Champions League group stage earlier this season.

Tottenham and Arsenal have also sent scouts to watch him in action.

Meanwhile L'Equipe say that Jurgen Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke to the player recently on the phone.

Liverpool have been on the lookout for another forward to help ease the pressure of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Klopp was initially planning ahead for next January, when Salah and Mane were set to jet off to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The competition has since been postponed until 2022 due to the coronavirus, giving Liverpool additional breathing space in the transfer market.

During Napoli's negotiations for Osimhen, the deal was held up when the player changed his agent.

It's believed that William D'Avila tried to stall the deal in a bid to land his client a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool CEO Peter Moore, who will leave Anfield at the end of August, is said to have a good connection with Osimhen's new agent which is why there was contact from the Reds.

But in the end, Liverpool were never going to have that kind of money to spend even if Klopp wanted to sign Osimhen after their phone call.

They were forced to pull out of the running for Timo Werner, who was initially earmarked as their top target.

The COVID-19 crisis has had a real impact on Liverpool's finances with their owners FSG also forced to deal with the suspension of the Major League Baseball season.

Nonetheless, there is optimism that UEFA's decision to extend the transfer window will allow them time to recover.
