Liverpool are set to make Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong their first signing of the summer transfer window and they have the perfect welcome gift for the incoming Dutch international.

Arne Slot and the recruitment team were tasked with strengthening at right-back ahead of the imminent departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, and it appears they are already making swift progress towards securing their primary target.

Conor Bradley signed a long-term contract extension with the club on Saturday, while Echo Sport reported earlier this week that Liverpool are expected to contact Leverkusen to trigger Frimpong’s £30 million release clause.

On Saturday afternoon, a report from The Athletic went a step further, stating that the player has agreed a five-year deal with the Merseyside club and is set to undergo a medical.

The season is not yet over, with Slot’s side set to play their final matches against Brighton and FA Cup winners Crystal Palace over the coming week, but it appears they may already have one new addition through the door.

Once the deal is formally completed and confirmed by the club, Liverpool will have the perfect welcome gift for Frimpong as he joins Slot’s squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

During his final two seasons at Celtic and throughout his time at Leverkusen, he has worn the No.30 shirt, and he will be able to continue with that number at Liverpool, should he choose to.

Several shirt numbers are currently available in the Liverpool squad, and more could become vacant as the summer progresses.

However, Frimpong’s preferred number has remained unused at Anfield for an entire decade, last worn by Suso during the 2014/15 season, as well as in 2012/13.

Before Suso, other players to have worn the No.30 shirt include former backup goalkeepers Charles Itandje and Daniele Padelli.

The most notable wearer, though, was Djimi Traore, who held the number from 1998 until 2003.
