Marc Guehi could receive his preferred shirt number at Liverpool if the Reds succeed in their pursuit of the Crystal Palace defender.

Liverpool are interested in making the centre-back their seventh new signing of the summer after a full-throttle start to the transfer window.

The reigning Premier League champions have already secured the services of wing-back Jeremie Frimpong, playmaker Florian Wirtz, left-back Milos Kerkez and goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman.

They are now reportedly working on a deal for Guehi, who has a year remaining on his contract with Palace.

Guehi has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs since it became clear that the England international would not be renewing his contract at Selhurst Park.

As reported by the ECHO, there is genuine interest from Liverpool in the centre-back.

It is claimed that Palace value their captain at around £70million - a figure the Reds are unlikely to meet given there's only 12 months left on his contract.

And Guehi will still need assurances that he will be a regular starter, considering the stiff competition offered by Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk.

But Liverpool can at least offer him his favourite shirt number - No.

6 - which is currently not worn by anyone in the squad.

Guehi has worn the number since he signed for Palace in 2021/22, though he has a history of embracing different numbers in the past, having worn No.

Sporting director Richard Hughes and Arne Slot have acted decisively so far, recognising the need to revamp the squad.

Last summer, newly-appointed head coach Slot only brought in one outfield player - Federico Chiesa - giving him a full season to evaluate which areas of his squad needed additional spending.

Winning the league comfortably in his debut English campaign was a significant bonus, with the Reds now proving their ambition with their activity in the transfer market.

Bringing in Guehi would also be a significant coup, considering his international pedigree and interest from Premier League rivals such as Newcastle and Tottenham.

Palace are unlikely to go lower than £40m during the negotiations, especially as Chelsea have a 20 per cent sell-on clause in place from when they sold Guehi to Palace for £18m in 2021.
