Crystal Palace have become the first new winners of the Community Shield in nearly 50 years - meaning only Manchester United have finished as runners-up more often than Liverpool after Sunday's game.

The Premier League champions went ahead after just four minutes at Wembley courtesy of a goal from their new striker, Hugo Ekitike.

But Jean-Philippe Mateta quickly restored parity from the spot, with the Eagles going on to win on penalties after further goals from Jeremie Frimpong and Ismaila Sarr saw the match end 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Justin Devenny plundered the winning penalty to give Palace a 3-2 win in the shootout after misses from Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.

And in achieving victory at Wembley, Palace have etched their name into the history books three months on from their FA Cup triumph.

They become the first new outright winners of the Community Shield since Nottingham Forest in 1978, ending a 47-year wait.

Only Manchester United (10) have finished runners-up in the Community Shield on more occasions than Liverpool, who have now done so nine times.

Speaking after the game, Arne Slot gave Crystal Palace their plaudits, telling TNT Sports: "It is disappointing of course, if you go in front and you are not able to win the game.

It was close and there were points where I thought we could win it but it went to penalties and they were better in that moment."

Glasner also sang the praises of his team post-match, saying: "I like it [the feeling].

We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance, I'm proud of the team."

Devenny, a product of Crystal Palace's academy, emphatically dispatched the winning penalty and the 21-year-old was singled out by his manager.

"Justin came to me and said 'I'll take it, I'll take the last one'," Glasner continued.

"I like him having this confidence and the determination to win us the game, he will play many minutes for us this season."
