Liverpool are close to thrashing out an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt for striker Hugo Ekitike.

The Reds are putting the finishing touches to a second bid they hope will be sufficient to make Ekitike their latest acquisition of a busy summer as Arne Slot looks to update the squad that romped to the Premier League title last season.

Frankfurt rejected an offer of €80million (£69.4m) from Newcastle United last week and want nearer to €100m (£86.7m) for a player who started his career at Reims and then spent 18 months at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Germany at the start of 2024.

Liverpool are hopeful of reaching a compromise in the region of €90m (£78m) and believe the finer details of the latest proposal, such as the make-up of add-ons, could be completed on Sunday.

Personal terms have already been agreed with France under-21 international Ekitike over a long-term contract.

Frankfurt have resigned themselves to losing the 23-year-old, who was omitted from the Bundesliga side's friendly win at neighbours FSV Frankfurt on Saturday.

Coach Dino Toppmoller said after the match: “That is a bitter loss.

It is quite possible that this will also be a thing of the past.”

Liverpool have already spent almost £200m this summer on reinforcements.

Germany international attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz has been signed for a club record £116m, Bayer Leverkusen team-mate and Holland right-back Jeremie Frimpong cost £29m and Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez £40m.

Goalkeepers Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman have also been recruited while Georgia international keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has arrived at Anfield after a £29m deal was agreed with Valencia last year.
