Liverpool have completed the signing of striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British-record transfer worth £125 million (€146m / $170m). This deal surpasses the previous British record of £115 million set by Chelsea when signing Moisés Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023.
Isak, a 25-year-old Sweden international, joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances for the club. He did not participate in Newcastle’s preseason and expressed dissatisfaction with broken promises at Newcastle, publicly pressing for the move throughout the summer.

Upon signing, Isak committed to a six-year contract at Liverpool and will wear the No. 9 shirt. Liverpool’s manager and club see Isak as a key attacker who aims to contribute goals and team effort, with Isak stating his ambition to win everything and improve continuously.
This transfer marks Liverpool’s continued heavy investment after winning the Premier League title in 2024, increasing their summer spending to £446 million with a net spend of around £218 million after player sales. Liverpool had earlier broken their transfer record this summer signing Florian Wirtz for £116 million.
Newcastle announced Isak’s sale in a short statement but have faced criticism for not having an immediate replacement strategy. In response, Newcastle signed Yoane Wissa for around $74 million, highlighting a significant reshuffling of their squad.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Isak ends what was described as one of the summer’s longest-running transfer sagas, with the forward’s departure likely impacting Newcastle’s ambitions negatively.
