And Liverpool have now confirmed Frimpong has completed all the formalities of his switch from Leverkusen, signing a deal which is understood to run until the summer of 2030.

Frimpong becomes the first signing of the summer at Anfield and just the third since Arne Slot and Richard Hughes arrived at the club last year, following on from the £10m addition of Federico Chiesa last August and the £29m move for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will officially complete his switch from Valencia when the transfer window opens.

Liverpool stepped up their efforts to recruit a right-sided full-back after it became clear Trent Alexander-Arnold had plans to leave the club at the end of his contract and Netherlands international Frimpong joins shortly after Conor Bradley was handed a new deal as a reward for his progress in the Reds' first-team over the past 18 months.

Liverpool held talks with Frimpong's Prolific Sports Group representatives and established early on that the 24-year-old would jump at the opportunity to join the Premier League champions.

The existence of a £29.5m release clause also made the negotiation a smoother process given Leverkusen were not in a position to demand a higher fee for an important first-team player and Frimpong will arrive in time for the start of next season.

The Dutchman moved to Leverkusen in the summer of 2021 from Celtic and has become a vital part of die Werkself's team, particularly last season when he scored 14 goals alongside a dozen assists as Alonso's team won the Bundesliga without losing.

The speedy Dutchman has been less prolific this term, scoring five goals and registering six assists in 33 games, but he was left out of the team for the draw at Mainz in anticipation of his move to Merseyside.

The £29.5m deal will likely be viewed as something of a bargain for Liverpool given the age and quality of a Dutch international who was an important part of a Leverkusen squad that won a domestic double last season before losing the Europa League final to Atalanta.

The Reds are confident of striking an agreement for the Germany international after the player's representatives made it known Wirtz would be keen to join the Premier League champions over Manchester City and Bayern Munich, who were both previously interested
