Liverpool begin their pre-season calendar on Sunday still coming to terms with the sudden death of Diogo Jota.

The Reds have been back in training since Tuesday, with the club so far choosing not to release any footage at all of the sessions.

While that is undoubtedly the correct decision from Liverpool, the team, staff and fans will have to show themselves this weekend as they face Preston North End.

It is certain to be an emotional occasion at Deepdale, with barely a week passing since a car accident tragically took the life of Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

And as they gear up to face the cameras, Liverpool have announced a series of tributes which will be held in honour of the siblings on Sunday.

There was some debate as to whether Sunday’s game would go ahead at all.

But after Liverpool consulted players and staff, a decision was made to keep it on the calendar.

As it is the first game of pre-season, it is the first chance Liverpool will have to honour Jota in a match setting.

And as per Liverpoolfc.com, there are several things planned to make sure the Portuguese remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

It has been announced that You’ll Never Walk Alone will be played ahead of the match, which is sure to be incredibly emotional.

Representatives from Preston will then lay a wreath in front of the Liverpool fans, before a minute’s silence will be observed alongside ‘digital tributes’ on the stadium’s screen and pitch side displays.

Both sets of players will wear black armbands in memory of Jota and Andre, while Preston have also made a ‘commemorative matchday programme’ which will feature written tributes to the brothers.

It feels like the right decision for Sunday’s match to go ahead as planned.

As upsetting as it sounds, there is still a season to prepare for.

For Liverpool’s players, they are going to need all the support they can possibly get as they step out onto the pitch.

Given the lack of access this week, no one can have any real idea of what kind of mental state the Liverpool squad are in ahead of the weekend.

They are professionals who will want to go out and honour their friend in the best way possible.

But it is also still incredibly raw.

This is step one for Liverpool, and fans will have little expectations of them on the pitch.
