Liverpool are set to make changes to their Champions League squad ahead of their opening game against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

Arne Slot made headlines earlier this month after leaving Federico Chiesa out of the Reds’ 22-man squad for the league phase of the tournament.

The Dutchman instead opted to select Rio Ngumoha ahead of the Italian, with the teenager ultimately needing to take up one of Liverpool’s 17 overseas berths to be eligible for selection despite the fact he is English and only 17 years old due to UEFA regulations.

This is because he does not yet qualify for a homegrown place or spot on List B due to UEFA squad regulations, given that he only joined the club as a 15-year-old from Chelsea last summer.

A player may be registered on List B if he was born on or after 1 January 2004 and has, since his 15th birthday, been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year.

Players aged 16 may be submitted if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years without interruption.

Had a deadline day move for Marc Guehi not collapsed, Liverpool would have likely included Chiesa in their ranks with summer signing Giovanni Leoni - who is also not yet eligible for a place on List B after signing from Parma this summer – instead of the man left out.

But with Slot needing the additional option at centre-back after missing out on the England international, he took the difficult decision to leave out Chiesa.

Clubs are entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season.

Liverpool’s quota of List B players is set to be announced on Wednesday morning, with clubs needing to submit their list to UEFA no later than 24:00 CET the day before a match.

While Ngumoha and Leoni might not be eligible for a place on List B, the Reds do boast a number of youngsters who do qualify and will be free to represent them in this season’s Champions League if selected.

Trey Nyoni and Jayden Danns both took part in open training with Slot’s squad on Tuesday afternoon and are eligible to be selected on List B.

Likewise, Stefan Bajcetic could also be added to List B - though the Spaniard is still working his way back after undergoing hamstring surgery in the summer.

Elsewhere, Luke Chambers, Calum Scanlon, Kaide Gordon, Trent Kone-Doherty and Amara Nallo have all played for the Liverpool first team before and would be eligible to be named on List B.

Meanwhile, following a last-minute UEFA rule change, Slot would be free to make one temporary change to his Champions League squad during the league phase in response to long-term injury or illness.

As a result, if one of Liverpool’s 17 overseas players were to suffer a long-term injury or illness up to the club's sixth Champions League league phase match away to Inter Milan on December 9, Slot would be free to temporarily call up Chiesa in their place.
