Castello Lukeba battle
French outlet Foot Mercato claims Liverpool are actively interested in RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, a player who was subject to Anfield rumours before his move to Germany from Lyon in 2023.
Since then he has collected a German Super Cup winners' medal and made 72 appearances, becoming established as a key starter under Marco Rose over two seasons.
Lining up his next move, the new report would state that the Reds are going up against fellow Champions League sides Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur for Lukeba's signature.
His contract at Leipzig is valid until 2029 and possesses a large €90m (£77.9m) release clause, however there is word of a 'gentleman's agreement' that means the Frenchman can move on for less this summer.
RB Leipzig stance
Conflicting with that report is another published only hours before, as German publication BILD believes RB Leipzig have slapped a 'not for sale' sign on their defensive talent.
Even though the club cannot offer Lukeba any European football next term and are attempting to cut costs through player sales this summer, he is not one they wish to let go
Instead, strikers Benjamin Sesko (€80m/£69m) and Lois Openda (€40m/£34m) plus attacking midfielder Xavi Simons (€70m/£60m) are the trio they wish to move on.
It is outlined that with his severe release clause, Leipzig are not expecting anyone to match this, plus internally the mutual feeling between club and player is that their association will continue as the best route for Lukeba's development.
This stance from club and player alike would stop Liverpool, or anybody for that matter, dead in their tracks.
