And, for completely different reasons, what a summer to be a Newcastle supporter.

The Reds have undergone quite the overhaul as the new Premier League season approaches, with nearly $400 million spent as the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have arrived.

And all the signs point to Liverpool not being done there.

Guehi’s signing would come as a relief to many Liverpool fans who were left worried about the Reds’ defensive options, especially after Joe Gomez suffered another injury during pre-season.

At the same time, Newcastle fans must be sick to their stomachs at the prospect of the Crystal Palace captain heading to Merseyside.

The Magpies have also been interested in Guehi, and just last year launched an $88 million bid for him, only to have it rejected.

Twelve months on, Liverpool could end up securing the England international for less than half that amount, with The Times’ Paul Joyce suggesting that a deal could be done for around $40.5M to $47M, including add-ons.

That would be just the latest blow in what has been a torrid summer for Newcastle in the transfer market, which has seen it continually miss out on its targets.

Already, Eddie Howe’s side has failed in its attempts to sign the likes of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Benjamin Sesko, among others, with even club legend Alan Shearer sounding tired of the mess in the north-east.

Alexander Isak could yet end up leaving Newcastle this summer

And, of course, Alexander Isak has thrown the club into disarray over his future, with reports now suggesting he will refuse to play as he looks to secure an exit to none other than Liverpool.

Newcastle may well have thought they had got one over on the Reds when its bid for Hugo Ekitike seemed to have thrown Liverpool off the scent of Isak, but now it looks as though that ploy has blown up in its face, with Howe facing the very real prospect of having no senior strikers to pick from for the start of the new Premier League campaign.

After such a memorable season for the Magpies, in which it won its first domestic trophy in 70 years and qualified for the Champions League, it’s fair to say that things have not gone to plan for them since, and it doesn’t look as though it’s going to get any better for them soon.
