Liverpool could be facing a race against time to sell players and raise funds before making a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike - or risk losing the striker to Arsenal.
Reds bosses have apparently identified Ekitike as one of three strikers to target in the remainder of the transfer window, along with Alexander Isak and Victor Osimhen.
While Liverpool would have a relatively free run at Osimhen and Isak seems unlikely to leave, Ekitike could be much more complicated.
The French striker has been linked with a host of big teams around Europe this summer after a breakout year in the Bundesliga, with Arsenal and Manchester United both linked.

And it seems Arsenal could have a rare advantage, it seems, because Mikel Arteta doesn't need to sell players before making a move for the striker.
In fact, Arsenal isn't expected to offload any big-name players, having already lost Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney on free transfers.
Liverpool, on the other hand, needs to raise funds through player sales before moving for a striker, whether that be Ekitike, Osimhen or Isak.
However Arsenal's interest could mean Richard Hughes could be pressured into pulling the trigger early, knowing the money will come back at some point this window.
The Reds have forked out $136 million for Florian Wirtz - as well as sealing deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
Liverpool could go up against Arsenal for Hugo Ekitike
As a result of the free-spending attitude shown by Fenway Sports Group so far this summer, players will have to be sold before serious money is put towards a striker.
Caomhin Kelleher has already departed to Brentford, and Jarrell Quansah is on the verge of being announced as a new Bayer Leverkusen player.
Those deals will effectively offset the arrivals of Frimpong and Kerkez, but further departures are needed to cancel out some of the money spent on Wirtz.
Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have all been linked with moves, and it seems at least three of those four will depart this summer.

Arsenal, however, is desperate to sign a new striker and there's no suggestion of any delays in raising funds.
The Gunners have been linked with Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP, and have been tipped to make a move considering the free-firing Swede's position in Lisbon.
Gyokeres has apparently told the reigning Portuguese champion that he wants to leave, and feels betrayed by the club for not facilitating a move at a price he deemed reasonable.
