Liverpool could be forced to play one of their final nine Premier League games at a neutral venue, according to reports.

The Reds are due to resume their top flight season later this month, as they bid to secure their 19th league crown.

Jurgen Klopp’s side need a maximum of six points to guarantee the trophy heads to Anfield, with their first fixture back due to be away to local rivals Everton on June 20.

There have been suggestions that Liverpool could be forced to play as many as three of their remaining away matches at neutral venues, in order to avoid crowd gathering which would risk breaking social distancing guidelines.

Now a fresh report in the Daily Mail claims that Liverpool’s final fixture away to Newcastle could be staged at a neutral venue, rather than at St James’ Park.

This is not because of Liverpool, however, but rather due to concerns that Newcastle fans could gather to celebrate the end of Mike Ashley’s ownership of the club.

A £300m Saudi-led deal is reportedly close, although Premier League approval is still to be confirmed.

The report states that Northumbria police have flagged the match as a concern that fans could congregate outside St James’ Park to celebrate the end of Ashley’s reign.

It has been claimed that police are aware of the #cans hashtag that has circulated on social media, which is believed to be in reference to supporters intending to raise a glass to Ashley’s exit.

And with Liverpool potentially able to finally celebrate a league title triumph, the report also states that police are worried that Reds fans could travel north to Newcastle to mark the occasion.
