Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been freshly named a 'top' transfer target for high-profile Saudi Pro League clubs approaching the opening of the summer window.

Not only could this offer the Reds a lucrative solution to their No.9 problem, but beneficially a fast one too.

The 25-year-old Uruguay international has had a number of critics throughout his three years with Liverpool, though a severe regression from 33 goals and assists last term to just 14 playing under Arne Slot in 2024/25 has seen his future on Merseyside questioned.

He has not started a match since March 8, against Southampton when he last scored, further indicating that his new head coach prefers other methods.

Anfield chiefs did not permit Nunez's mid-season exit in January when Saudi interest was established, but that stance could very well change if return on the £85m spent in 2022 comes their way over the summer.

London-based international Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat believe that the Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahli are all strongly interested in the Reds' No.9.

What all four have in common is that they are backed by the Gulf state's Public Investment Fund (PIF), meaning they are the richest in the division and have been the ones most often seen targeting high-profile players from Europe.

Additionally, in Al-Hilal's case they will be playing at this summer's FIFA Club World Cup.

Nunez has been linked with this team in recent months more than others, and if his sale were to go through in the initial transfer window scheduled for June 1-10 to allow players to be registered for the tournament, it could prove beneficial for all involved.

The Saudi team would land their man and Liverpool would get their transfer fee ready to use for the remaining three months of the window.

Ultimately it is explained that sporting decisions, i.e.

summer signings, will be made at each Saudi club by the companies that own each.

Alternatively, there has been talk of Nunez staying in European football if not at Anfield.

Napoli's sporting director Giovanni Manna has reportedly held multiple rounds of talks with the striker's representatives .

The ECHO previously reported that a fee north of £50m should tempt the Reds into a sale.
