Atletico Madrid is reportedly targeting Viktor Gyokeres this summer, which could boost Liverpool's chances of signing Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez only joined Atletico last summer, and while there has been no indication yet that he could leave the Spanish club, it is intriguing that Diego Simeone is seemingly eyeing another striker.

Alvarez, who has also been linked with Arsenal, was Atletico's main striker this season, and enjoyed a brilliant campaign, scoring 29 goals and registering seven assists in 54 appearances for his new club.

However, Atletico have been persistently linked with a move for a new striker in recent weeks, with Gyokeres and Liverpool's very own Darwin Nunez both reported to be among the players targeted.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Atletico could allow Alvarez to leave the club to make room.

Simeone favors playing with two strikers, so it is likely his intention that whichever striker Atletico signs will play alongside Alvarez rather than instead of him.

Meanwhile, Atletico's apparent interest in Gyokeres could put a spanner in the works as far as Arsenal's pursuit of a new striker is concerned.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the former Coventry star after a season in which their lack of a world-class striker was attributed to their failure to win a trophy.

Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting CP, making him hot property during the summer transfer window.

Luis Diaz is perpetually linked with a move to Barcelona, and Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr has also emerged as an interested party; Al-Nassr is on the lookout for a new forward as it prepares for life after Cristiano Ronaldo, who appears to have played his last game for the club ahead of the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

Federico Chiesa's Liverpool future is also far from certain after he started just two games across the Premier League and Champions League this season, both of which were effectively meaningless.
