Brighton defender turned midfielder, Ben White, put in a fine performance last night as his team narrowly missed out on a result at Manchester City.

White was deployed by Graham Potter in an unusual defensive midfield position, tasked with protecting his back four and stifling the likes of Keving De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

And a fine job he did, too. White was influential, getting about the pitch well, nicking the ball from City players, and crucially, using the ball wisely when he did have it.

Indeed, per Whoscored, White completed over 90% of his passes last night. He was the only Brighton player to do that and it bettered the accuracy shown from De Bruyne and Gundogan.

Liverpool, then, have been linked with a move for White. Reports in December of a potential £50m move have gathered pace again this week, with the Liverpool Echo stating that the Reds do remain very much interested.

  The perfect Klopp player

Leeds fans probably already knew White was adept in midfield and defence. He played a similar role for the Whites in their promotion season at times, winning plaudits for how comfortable he is on the ball.

The Brighton man could very well be ideal for Jurgen Klopp. We’ve seen this season how Klopp has needed to use the likes of Fabinho in both a defensive and midfield role, and White displayed characteristics of the Brazilian last night.

Of course, it’s more than likely Liverpool would be buying White as a central defender. And why not, he’s excellent in there too.

But last night’s display will have caught the eye. Few players can transition to playing in defence into a deeper midfield role and it showed White has the class, ability, and versatility to pull off such tasks.

Liverpool, then, might be wise to ensure they are the next club for White as he continues his footballing journey.
