Liverpool still have plenty of work to do in the transfer market despite spending over £250 million this summer alone.

The Reds are continuing to focus their efforts on the business end of the pitch despite the arrival of Hugo Ekitike, as the club wait for the green light from Newcastle United before bidding again for Alexander Isak.

With Darwin Nunez all but set to follow Luis Diaz out the door at Anfield after an agreement for his sale was reached for Al-Hilal, it is understandable that one more attacking option is being sought.

However, Ibrahima Konate featured as the only natural centre-back in the friendlies against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, and it appears Richard Hughes is set to finally strengthen a depleted backline.

Following the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds have been left with only three senior centre-back options, one of which, Joe Gomez, has been absent throughout pre-season.

Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi has been widely reported throughout the summer, but while a formal approach has yet to materialise, that may be about to change.

Speaking on The Redmen TV, journalist Ben Jacobs shared the latest update on the England international’s future and whether the Reds are ready to bring him to Anfield.

“Liverpool could still make an approach.

It’s possible, if they do, the expectation is that they’ll bid below £40 million, whereas Crystal Palace at the beginning of the window had 50 million (in mind), in the middle of the window had 45 million (in mind).

“Some people say the price has dropped closer to 40 million now, but Liverpool were always looking south of that number and well, well south of the 45 and 50 million numbers that have been quoted at different parts of this summer.

“So they’ve done their job in the sense the price is slowly trickling down, but they also have to convince the player if they chose to move that it’s the right kind of transfer for him, specifically in the short term with a view to the World Cup.

With the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Konate’s long-term future at Anfield, combined with Gomez’s poor availability record, the depth at centre-back outside of Virgil van Dijk appears bleak.

Liverpool supporters will remember all too well the events of the 2020/21 campaign, where the club scrambled to sign Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on Deadline Day of the winter transfer window, only for the pair to be replaced towards the end of the campaign by Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.

Jurgen Klopp worked miracles that season in securing Champions League football on the final day, and while few will doubt Slot’s ability to muster the same result in similar circumstances, this is a completely avoidable situation.

Indeed, Crystal Palace are demanding £45 million for Guehi, albeit a steep price to pay for a player in the final year of his deal, but a steal in comparison to the quality the England international could bring to Anfield.

Fresh off lifting the FA Cup for Palace, he possesses leadership qualities that are desperately lacking in the centre-back department, excluding van Dijk.
