Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Pedro Gonçalves, inevitably, has been compared to Bruno Fernandes, but it is not a wholly unfair link to make.

Last season, Gonçalves scored 23 times and assisted five as Sporting Lisbon won the Portuguese title for the first time since 2002, which saw him linked with a move to Manchester United, Liverpool and others.

Bruno Fernandes cost Manchester United an initial fee of around £46m when he moved from Sporting in January 2020.

This season, Gonçalves has kept up similar form, having scored 11 times and assisted once in 14 games, and a similar fee to Fernandes could be expected.

Having scored twice against Borussia Dortmund this midweek, knocking the German side out and seeing that his side and Ajax will progress to the last-16 from Group C, Gonçalves became just the second Portuguese player to score two or more goals in consecutive Champions League fixtures after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gonçalves' underlying (and actual) numbers have looked good for a long enough period now to have caught the eye of Liverpool and he is at the perfect age to kick on and take the next step.

The 23-year-old scores goals — and lots of them — from midfield, and has taken on Fernandes' mantle as a leader and talisman for his club.
