Liverpool have already spent a club-record £295m so far this summer and are showing no signs of slowing down.

The Reds have added eight players to Arne Slot’s ranks, and are now working on deals to sign both Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni to bolster their centre-back options.

Talks are ongoing with Crystal Palace over an initial £30m deal with the England international, rising to £35m with add-ons.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy have claimed the teenage Italian would be available for £26m plus bonuses.

When you consider Liverpool are also continuing to monitor Alexander Isak’s situation at Newcastle United and a potential defensive double deal is unlikely to be the end of their incoming business.

The Reds previously had an £110m offer rejected by the Magpies for the wantaway Swede, and are actively looking to add a new forward to their ranks after selling both Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Isak has been made to train alone by Newcastle, and has made it clear that he wants to leave the club - with Liverpool his destination of choice.

The Reds Liverpool have not returned with an improved offer since the Magpies rejected their £110m bid on August 1, with it understood that club bosses considered it futile to return with an improved offer, given the swiftness and clarity of Newcastle’s rejection.

But with the Magpies still pursuing new attacking recruits of their own and Isak adamant he wants to move on, the Reds will be ready to react if Newcastle soften their stance.

Isak will likely cost Liverpool a British record transfer fee while if the Reds are to sign the striker, Guehi and Leoni before the transfer window closes on September 1, they will have likely spent over £475m.

Considering their previous record haul stood at £174.25m when signing Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri in the summer of 2018, Liverpool have emphatically smashed their previous highest outlay for a single window.

Meanwhile, with the Reds never previously signing more than eight players in a single transfer window, this summer is also poised to become their busiest as well as costliest.

Of course, the caveat for this is the fact that Liverpool have also made considerable sales already this summer, with more expected to follow.

The Reds could receive up to £202.5m from selling Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Nat Phillips, Jarell Quansah, Luis Diaz, Tyler Morton and Darwin Nunez.

Meanwhile, the likes of Kostas Tsimimas, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and Ben Doak could also still depart this summer to bolster the coffers even more considerably.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Liverpool could expect to negotiate upwards to £300m in player sales this summer.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.

The Reds do need to move players on before the transfer window closes on September 1 regardless of any further incomings.

They currently boast 27 senior players over the age of 21, though Luca Stephenson is set to rejoin Dundee United on loan for the season.

His looming exit would leave Liverpool with 26 senior players, boasting their full quota of 17 overseas and eight homegrown players.

Admittedly, from such totals, you can perhaps discount Calvin Ramsay, Rhys Williams, James Balagizi and Fabian Mrozek with the quartet not part of Slot’s first team plans for the forthcoming campaign.

If so, the Reds are left with 16 overseas players and six homegrown players.

As a result, further outgoings will be needed for Liverpool to complete their potential remaining incoming business.

Sign Isak and Guehi and the Reds are left with a 24-man squad, with one homegrown slot remaining, while Leoni qualifies as an Under-21s player when it comes to the Premier League.

However, as a new Liverpool signing, he would not be eligible for a place on ‘List B’ - made up of Under-21s players - when it comes to UEFA competitions as he would not have been at the club long enough to qualify for such status.

The same is still the case for Rio Ngumoha after he signed from Chelsea last summer, as well as summer signings Armin Pecsi and Will Wright.

Consequently, the Reds would actually need to limit themselves to a 23-man senior squad for the forthcoming campaign if they wished to select both Leoni and Ngumoha for this season’s Champions League - with further exits needed to make room for such players as a result.

As a result, if Liverpool are to sign Isak, Guehi and Leoni, while also keeping room for Ngumoha in their senior ranks, they would need to move on (or leave out) at least six players over the age of 21 - not including Stephenson’s loan return to Dundee United.
