Dejan Lovren has stepped up his efforts to overcome a hamstring injury that has stunted his start to the new year with Liverpool.

Liverpool head into their Champions League Round of 16 first leg with just one recognised centre-back available in Joel Matip.

He then failed to feature in five out of six games across November and December, and has now missed five out of six league fixtures since the turn of the year.

Lovren didn’t get his season underway until October’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City at Anfield having returned from the World Cup with a pelvis injury.

It is proving to be an injury-stricken campaign for the defender, who has managed just 13 appearances across all competitions out of Liverpool’s 34 games.

Having been declared fit enough to make the bench for the 1-1 draw against Leicester on January 30, he was later confined to an extended spell out of action due to a setback in his recovery.

The Croatian hasn’t played for the Reds since being substituted in the sixth minute of the FA Cup defeat to Wolves at Molineux on January 7.
