Nat Phillips is undergoing a medical at West Bromwich Albion ahead of completing a permanent move from Liverpool to the Championship club.

The 28-year-old only had one year left on his Reds contract.

The centre-back has spent the past two seasons out on loan at Celtic, Cardiff City and Derby County.

He made 33 appearances for the Rams last year, returning a goal and three assists to help them avoid relegation from the Championship.

Phillips is now set to become Ryan Mason’s first signing at the Hawthorns after the one-time England international was appointed Baggies head coach earlier this summer.

The 28-year-old joined Liverpool from Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2016, initially linking up with the Reds’ academy.

Catching Jurgen Klopp’s eye in pre-season in the summer of 2018, he then spent the 2019/20 season on loan at VfB Stuttgart and helped the German outfit win promotion to the Bundesliga.

However, he was also handed his competitive Liverpool debut midway through the campaign when temporarily recalled in January to help answer a defensive injury crisis, with the centre-back starting in an FA Cup third round victory over Everton at Anfield before returning to Germany in January.

Phillips then made 20 appearances for the Reds during the 2020/21 campaign, scoring one goal, as he memorably answered another defensive injury crisis after Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip were all struck down by season-ending injuries.

Impressing at centre-back alongside Rhys Williams, the pair helped Liverpool recover from a poor run of mid-season form to qualify for the Champions League against the odds.

Retained by the Reds for the first half of the 2021/22 campaign, the defender then joined AFC Bournemouth on loan in January and helped them win promotion back to the Premier League.

While he had been available for transfer in recent years, permanent exits failed to materialise as interested clubs did not meet Liverpool’s asking price, with the centre-back instead signing for Celtic, Cardiff and Derby on loan.

But after an impressive campaign on loan in the Championship, he is set to secure a permanent return to the English second tier with West Brom - who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season.

Phillips’ last competitive appearance for Liverpool came as a substitute away at Wolves in the FA Cup in January 2023.

However, he did feature under Arne Slot in pre-season last year, and even wore the the captain's armband in friendly victories over Arsenal and Manchester United.

He will leave the Reds having been at the club for nine years, and with 29 appearances under his belt since being handed his debut in January 2020.
