Liverpool will still hope that’s not the case, but it’s looking a distinct possibility now.
Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena ended the Gunners’ hopes of a possible Champions League and Premier League double this season.
The defending champions will have to relinquish their crown after falling in a penalty shootout to Real Madrid.

With Liverpool needing to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Atalanta tomorrow night in the Europa League, and West Ham 2-0 down against Xabi Alonso’s seemingly invincible Bayer Leverkusen, there could be two more Premier League sides following them out of Europe.
Villa, 2-1 up against Lille in the Conference League, could end up being the last one standing.
Despite being in a title race with both sides, there likely would have been more than a few Liverpool fans hoping to see both City and Arsenal make it through to the last four on Wednesday.
As Jamie Carragher explained, it could have handed their side a major advantage.
"For Liverpool to win the league — and I've always believed this — they need the two of them [Manchester City and Arsenal] to play each other in the Champions League semi-final,” Carragher said last week on The Gary Neville Podcast.
It takes a lot out of you and when you're going for a league title, that could help Liverpool."
That of course won’t happen now, and with City facing Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend, soon all three sides could have a clear run through to the end of the Premier League campaign.
Liverpool might not be overly thrilled at the prospect of neither City nor Arsenal having any other distractions as it tries to overhaul both sides.
But Wednesday’s drama showed exactly why the Reds shouldn't be giving up hope just yet of clinching the league.
