Liverpool’s summer transfer window could have taken an entirely new shape if latest reports from Italy is anything to go by.

The Reds’ had a quiet, yet dramatic summer transfer window, as they completed only two deals in two months.

Federico Chiesa’s reported €12 million deal was the only deal that brought a new player in at the club, while Giorgi Mamardashvili will join the club next summer, despite signing for Liverpool this summer.

Most of the business that was done at the Anfield this summer revolved around outgoings, with Richard Hughes and co.

recouping over £70 from the sales of Fabio Carvalho, Sepp van den Berg and Bobby Clark.

Meanwhile, Liverpool tried and failed to sign a defensive midfielder, with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi their preferred target.

However, according to fresh reports from Italy, Zubimendi was not the only midfield player the Reds looked at this summer.

According to Italian news outlet, Gazzetta dello Sport, the Reds explored the possibility of signing former Juventus man Adrien Rabiot this summer.

The France international is a free agent after leaving Juventus at the end of last season, when his contract expired in July, having amassed 212 appearances for the Italian giants.

But he is yet to find a new home and he continues to explore his next move.

The report claims that the 29-year-old have always wanted to move to the Premier League, and they name Liverpool  as one of the few clubs that considered the deal.

“Adrien has always dreamed of the Premier League and at 29 years old the decision on his future could be the last useful one to measure himself with English football?

He has always publicly set the stake of participation in the Champions League, almost to screen the suitors, and over the weeks several clubs have tried to sniff out the opportunity, from Atletico Madrid to Liverpool.”

Liverpool have made it clear that they will deal if the right opportunity comes, as seen in their signing of Rabiot’s former Juventus teammate Federico Chiesa.

But it appears that they were not convinced about bringing Rabiot to Anfield, despite how financially reasonable the deal appears.
