The transfer window is now closed, with new signings already making their mark.

Liverpool face surprise challenge in race for Marc Guehi

The deadline day brought plenty of drama, including Liverpool smashing records to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle in a jaw-dropping £125m move.

But despite pulling off one of the biggest transfers of the summer, the Merseysiders failed to secure Marc Guehi at the last moment.

Liverpool came close to completing a dramatic deadline-day deal for Crystal Palace captain Guehi in a £35m move.

Despite submitting the necessary paperwork to extend talks beyond the 7pm deadline, Palace pulled out after failing to secure a replacement for their skipper.

The Eagles had been working on signing a new centre-back but could not finalise the deal in time.

Faced with the risk of being left short in defence, the club opted to keep Guehi.

It is also understood that Palace’s manager made it clear he would consider walking away if Guehi was sold without a replacement.

As a result, Guehi’s anticipated move to Anfield fell apart, leaving Liverpool without their key defensive target and Palace holding onto their captain – at least until the next transfer window.

But the Reds won’t have it easy, as Manchester City are also planning to swoop in and beat them to the Palace captain’s signature at the Etihad.
