Liverpool fans all make the same point after watching Tijjani Reijnders’ Premier League debut for Man City

Liverpool fans were able to sit back and watch Saturday’s Premier League action safe in the knowledge that they’d picked up three points the day before.

At one stage it had looked as though the Reds would be in for a difficult weekend after surrendering a two goal lead against Bournemouth.

But after Liverpool roared back to win the game at Anfield, supporters could relax as the rest of the Premier League‘s opening weekend unfolded.

Despite their own victory, though, Reds fans may have been worried at seeing the ease at which Manchester City strolled past Wolves.

City won 4-0 without even breaking a sweat, as their new signings made an instant impact.

And while the likes of Rayan Ait Nouri and Rayan Cherki could have ended up at Liverpool had things been different, fans were left rueing their team’s failure to sign midfielder Tijjani Reijnders after the game.

Liverpool’s display on Friday was a clear indication that the Reds probably need another midfielder at some point in the near future.

However, with other areas to focus on, they were always unlikely to sign one this summer.

Nevertheless, that has not stopped fans from being upset at missing out on Reijnders, who scored and delivered an excellent performance on Saturday.

“Wish Liverpool signed Reijnders man what a player,” said one supporter, while another added: “Unfortunately City have signed an absolute beast in Reijnders.”

“Sure I’m not the only Liverpool fan quietly reflecting that Wirtz cost more than Reijnders + Cherki albeit latter sold in crisis club Lyon fire sale,” someone else noted.

“Reijnders playing for city is more painful than Isak not coming to Liverpool,” was another’s verdict, with one more fan simply claiming: “I would have loved to see Reijnders at Liverpool.”

Another fan suggested that Reijnders ‘screamed a Liverpool player’, with others noting their surprise that Arne Slot had not tried to bring the 27-year-old to Anfield.

“Is not a surprise that Reijnders can adapt to EPL standards,” they say.

“Just look at how he carried The Netherlands in last year’s Euro 24 and I’m genuinely surprised Liverpool did not make an attempt to sign him.”

“Reijnders is brilliant.

Thought he was brilliant against Liverpool in the Champions League last season,” another added.

“Will prove to be a great signing for Man City.”

Reijnders has become an instant hit over pre-season at Man City and for those paying attention, his excellent Premier League debut will not have come as a surprise.

Those in the Liverpool squad who share a national team with the midfielder – and there are a few – will also have been unsurprised at seeing him excel.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that Liverpool have made a mistake in not going for Reijnders.

The Reds may need another midfielder, but that is mainly to take the load off Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.

With Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz and Curtis Jones also in the mix, Liverpool have one of the best midfields in Europe.

As good as he is, Reijnders would not be guaranteed to start ahead of Gravenberch, Mac Allister or Szoboszlai and with Liverpool needing to spend their money elsewhere, he was never going to arrive.
