It is certainly nice to be back.

In the meantime, however, the transfer market is still open, and Liverpool are expected to be busy in what remains of it.

The Reds have certainly done some brilliant business so far, as underlined by goals from Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong on Sunday.

But there is more to come, including the absolute need for Liverpool to sign a centre-back.

Marc Guehi has been heavily tipped to join, with fresh reports this weekend suggesting that Liverpool are in pole position to sign the Crystal Palace captain.

And as he lined up against them on Sunday, Reds supporters ran the rule over Guehi,

Liverpool’s need for a new centre-back was underlined by the fact they had no recognised defender on the bench at Wembley.

With Joe Gomez still out injured, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are Arne Slot’s only options.

Would love him at LFC.”

“I think Liverpool will get Guehi.

This performance is crazy,” another commented.

“This Guehi audition is nice,” was one more supporter’s verdict, with another claiming: “Guehi is great.

“Would really like him to sign for us.”

“Get Guehi immediately,” someone else said.

“Just pay the 50 mil for Guehi, we clearly need him,” was another’s verdict.

“Guehi is putting on one hell of a performance for his future club,” one more fan summed up.

While Guehi was impressing for Palace at one end, Virgil van Dijk was struggling badly at the other.

The Liverpool captain is still the best centre-back around, and that will remain the case into the new season as well.

But Sunday’s showpiece at Wembley was one of Van Dijk’s worst for some time.

Guilty of fouling Ismaila Sarr to give away a first-half penalty, the 34-year-old then inexplicably pushed out, allowing Sarr in to get the second.

Van Dijk’s disappointing afternoon will likely not be indicative of a more permanent decline, but it did underline just how much Liverpool need some more help.
