Liverpool played the final game of their Premier League season on Sunday and turned in another disappointing performance.
It matters little in the grand scheme of things, but the Reds would have wanted a better ending to such an excellent season.
As it was, it took them an age to break down a resolute Crystal Palace team, failing to win for a third game of four at the end of the Premier League season.
There were some good individual performances on the day, but by and large Liverpool were as poor as they have been since winning the title in April.
One of the most glaring issues has been the gaps in the Reds’ midfield, and they were there for all to see once again on Sunday.
Having been in need of a rest since Liverpool’s April win over Tottenham, Alexis Mac Allister was once again missing from the middle of the park.
And according to supporters on social media, it was no coincidence to see Liverpool struggle as a result.

For Liverpool supporters watching the game, the result ultimately meant absolutely nothing.
But put together with their other games since winning the title, it is perhaps a bit of a worry.
Mac Allister has only started once in those four matches, being rested by Arne Slot ahead of another international trip with Argentina.
And according to fans, his absence has highlighted just how important he is to Slot.

“Mac Allister is on the same level now of importance as Alisson, Van Dijk & Salah,” said one supporter.
“Mac Allister is the glue,” added another.
“Mac Allister deserves an apology from a lot of you here who act like you know all about this game,” someone else observed.

“Football without Mac Allister is nothing,” another said, “No coincidence that we’ve been poor every time Mac Allister hasn’t played,” one more observed.
Comparisons were also made with the likes of Curtis Jones, who failed to convince in Mac Allister’s place.
“The gap between Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister is huge,” said one supporter.
“Mac Allister creativity is so important for this team, we’re very much different team with and without him,” another claimed.
“Mac Allister carries this team so hard, the difference is night and day when he isn’t playing,” someone else suggested, while one fan summed things up perfectly by simply claiming “Alexis Mac Allister, you really miss him when he doesn’t play.”
While Sunday’s game, and the three before them, do not matter in the bigger picture, they will have been instructive for Slot ahead of the early stages of next season.
Perhaps most significantly, Liverpool saw Ryan Gravenberch sent off in the final game of the campaign.
As a result, the Reds will be without the Premier League’s young player of the year for the first three matches of the new year.
Unless injury strikes, Mac Allister will be back for those.
