There are of course those who would argue Liverpool had already knocked themselves off by the time of United's first Premier League triumph in 1993.

Liverpool and their achievements were the benchmark Ferguson knew he had to measure up to even as his Old Trafford era was starting to take shape and produce trophies, which perhaps explains why his career was punctuated with various snipes in the direction of Anfield.

Liverpool supporters found ample opportunities over the years to disagree with what Alex Ferguson had to say.

And he was only able to make a dent in the Reds' lead when it came to European Cups, his two successes in 1999 and 2008 being levelled out by the miracle of Istanbul in 2005 which Liverpool extended into a 6-3 lead in Madrid in 2019.

Ferguson's 26-year reign ended with the Red Devils having turned an 18-7 league championship deficit in Liverpool's favour into a lead of two for the Old Trafford club after thirteen unanswered title wins.
