Liverpool fans once let Real Madrid legend Luka Modric know exactly how they feel about him at Anfield

Liverpool fans have been coming under scrutiny recently for their treatment of departing local boy Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold was roundly booed by large pockets of supporters after announcing his intention to leave the club at the end of the season.

Often seen as some of the best fans in the country, and indeed the world, it surprised many to hear those at Anfield so loudly turn on ‘one of their own.’

While it may be unfair to criticise those supporters for taking their only route to voicing their frustration with Alexander-Arnold, their reputation as some of the best around is well earned.

As well as making Anfield a cauldron of noise, Liverpool fans also recognise quality when they see it.

Whether that quality is on their own team or the opposition makes no difference, as departing Real Madrid legend Luka Modric found out in 2023.

Modric is set to leave Real Madrid after 13 years of stellar service to the Spanish giants.

He will not be linking up with Alexander-Arnold next season.

As he prepares to leave the club which delivered him six Champions League titles, the little Croatian is being lauded with all kinds of praise.

Some Liverpool fans may be lending their voice to that after what happened with Modric at Anfield two years ago.

Despite Madrid dominating Liverpool in the Champions League last-16, and beating the Reds 5-2, Modric was applauded from the field after being substituted late on in February 2023.

It was a slightly remarkable show from the Anfield faithful, who sounded their appreciation of a classy performance in difficult circumstances for their own team.

Modric, clearly taken by surprise at the display, took to social media after the match to thank the Liverpool crowd.

“Thank you Anfield.

Special atmosphere,” he wrote, adding a respect hashtag and an applauding and handshake emoji.

It has been quite a ride for Modric at Real Madrid.

Despite initially struggling in Spain he has gone on to become one of the most decorated footballers in history.

But despite being 39 years of age, the Croatian legend is not planning on finishing any time soon.

It is unlikely Modric will be back at Anfield again, but as he is reportedly planning to end his career with the 2026 World Cup, the midfielder looks set to carry on playing beyond his Madrid exit.

Where that is remains to be seen, but with a legendary figure like Modric on the market, there will likely be offers from the US and the Middle East.
