There have been surprises on the way, of course, with few anticipating that Liverpool would beat Bayern Munich to Florian Wirtz, for example.

But, by and large, the types of players Liverpool are targeting have been earmarked for some time.

After bringing in a right-back, left-back and attacking midfielder, it is expected that the Reds will enter the market for a centre-back and a centre-forward.

Dealing with the defence first, latest reports suggest Liverpool are potentially working on a signing which Gary Lineker first mentioned back in November 2024.

As one of the most prominent pundits in English football, Lineker’s voice always carries weight.

The former England striker rarely delves into matters relating to transfers, with his expertise in presenting, interviewing and debating talking points much more prevalent.

However, Lineker broke with tradition while speaking to Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on The Rest Is Football podcast seven months ago to suggest Liverpool were trying to sign Nottingham Forest defender Murillo.

“I understand they’re after Murillo from Forest,” he said.

“Well those two [Murillo and Milenkovic] at Forest have done really well as well this season, it’s one of the reasons why Forest are flying high in the Premier League.”

With Liverpool in need of a new centre-back to replace Jarell Quansah this summer, The Athletic reported on Tuesday that they are indeed keeping a close eye on Murillo, although his valuation may reportedly put the Reds off.

As Liverpool assess the options to add to their defence, Marc Guehi has emerged as the most likely candidate to be signed.

However, in our opinion, Murillo is a much more exciting option than the Crystal Palace captain.

At just 22 years old, the Brazilian has more room to grow than Guehi and having already developed enormously across two years with Forest, he looks likely to get even better.

Left-footed, aggressive, committed and excellent on the ball, Murillo has all the attributes to be a success at Liverpool.

Previous reports have suggested that Forest would demand £80m to sell Murillo, while he also signed a new contract as recently as January.

As a result, this may be one to watch more for next year in terms of a transfer.

But Lineker was seemingly right, Murillo is on Liverpool’s radar and that should get fans excited.
