Liverpool have continued their trend this season of winning games late.

Turf Moor played host to a football game that was difficult to watch at times as the Reds continued their 100% win record after a dramatic last 10 minutes saw a red card, a handball, and a penalty go in favour of the away side.

Mohamed Salah stepped up to the spot to score the winner after Hannibal Mejbri stuck his arm out in the box to give away the winning penalty, which cost Burnley a point against the league leaders.

Scott Parker’s side stayed compact and defended well despite the mistake in their own half, which was preceded by Lesley Ugochukwu’s second yellow card for a foul on Florian Wirtz.

But it has become a habit this season for the previous Premier League champions, who set a dramatic record after Salah’s penalty for the most consecutive games won in the final 10 minutes.

Their frantic final moments so far have included an unstoppable free kick, a strike from a 16-year-old star, and a popular Italian’s volley to seal unlikely victories.

There may have been a difference if they had some new options on the bench to mark a more decisive victory, but Arne Slot decided £125 million striker Alexander Isak was not ready to sit on the bench for the game.

While Slot revealed Isak will make his debut this Wednesday in the Champions League, it is their performances in the English top flight that need the creative spark and finishing ability of the Swedish striker.

It is definitely far from the quality and consistency of the Dutchman’s team last season, but it is early days, and for fans, the points on the table are the most important as they head into a busy few months.

Robbie Mustoe, a former Middlesbrough player turned pundit, has delivered some good news, though, for supporters.

Speaking on the NBCSN broadcast, the Englishman gave his assessment of the side’s first four games so far.

Mustoe explained: “The last 10 minutes, I’m like they’re not looking like scoring.

I know Ngumoha comes off the bench and Frimpong as well, but it looked like they struggled today, and they’re so far away from the best version of Liverpool when Isak’s fit and ready and 100% and maybe a couple other spots in the team have been figured out, they could be brilliant, but they’re not at the moment.

“At the start of the season, I remember thinking if they’re not quite right at the start when they’re trying to figure things out, they might drop points to put them behind.

Well, the good news for Liverpool fans is they’re nowhere near their best and they’re still finding ways to win.

That’s good news for them.”

But even though it is a positive for fans, he was honest about the fact that these performances cannot continue for the rest of the year.

“They can’t keep doing that.

If they want to be champions in this league, we know the standards and the competition level.

So far so good, but can they get to the best version, or are they going to continue to not look quite in their top performance?” he said.

Fortunately, following that lacklustre performance, there is the Merseyside derby against Everton, which could light a fire underneath this side.

The importance of the game and its usual ferocity may not provide the greatest performance in terms of footballing quality, but it will force them to be more energetic than they have been.

If they are looking to find a path to be back at their best, the likelihood of an Isak appearance off the bench and the options for some of the other attacking talent to force a bit of creativity, which may just be what the team needs.

A derby so early in the season, coupled with a few less-than-perfect performances, may bolster the mood of fans who want more from their team.
